Should We Do Good Deeds?
By Kathy Hadley
A very good friend of mine whom I met in a worldwide network to which I belong, made the statement once to me," a good deed never goes unpunished." Ever since he said that, I've given it some thought. You see. I am an optimist and have been for most of my life. I have been on my own personal emotional, mental and spiritual journey for a long time. Whenever there has been someone I could aid or do "a good deed" as they say, I would try and do it. You could say it was part of my upbringing. We were taught from as long as I can remember to help out our neighbors, church, school, community at large, etc. It was very normal for us to go every Saturday to church and help print, fold and otherwise produce the church bulletin. Also, to help out the nuns with whatever they needed at the convent or school. Neighbors in our little part of the world always helped one another. So when I moved from my home town to "the city" (which still is rather small relative to others) I was surprised the first time I needed aid and no one helped me. However, my lifelong training was too much of a habit by now. I still was guided to help others whenever I was able. That must be why that somewhat pessimistic quote of my friend mentioned earlier stuck in my mind. Because for me, most of my "good deeds" have not been punished. Not rewarded directly either, but at least, for the most part, did not cause me harm. You may be wondering why I'm writing all this. Well, it came to my mind after reading this week's focus on books and what you would want to write about. One day (and I hope it is soon) I think I would like to write a book that includes some of my life lessons learned. My final thought from all of this is basically a paraphrase of something Mother Teresa is given credit as saying, 'whatever happens in the world, do your best anyway. Because it was never between you and them, it was always between you and God, anyway." (A very nice person reminded me of this today, in so many words, and my gratitude goes out to her.) So, do "good deeds" just for the sake of doing them. Know in your own heart your intentions and feel good about it. It is only and has always been between you and God, anyway!!!
